THE STATELY SIDE OF EXPO, Expowall Gallery, Milan – December 2015
This photo exhibition on the urban landscape and the beautiful work The Stately Side of Expo by Cirenei and Menghi, which lies at its heart, inaugurates the Galleria Expowall activity.
This theme will be further declined with other photographic initiatives in the course of 2016 and represents the will of contributing through the subjective and free vision of the artist and photographer to the reflection on the development of cities and communities that we live and define through our behavior.
From this point of view EXPO 2015 has been an extraordinary catalyst of glances and thoughts, and this is why it has become our starting point.
Among the various meanings attributed to Expo 2015, one may have been overlooked, crushed by the force of numbers: but the World Expo has basically set up an exceptional moment of exaltation of subjectivity and also of heterodoxy.
The definition of the decumanus, the thistle, the tensile structure and position of the cluster formed the simple and efficient framework, and allowed the countries’ freedom and subjectivity in designing and building. It was an episode of overall creative freedom.
The photographer records this creative freedom, and applies his own. This is illustrated by the excellent work of Cirenei and Menghi: different visions basically applied to the same universe that allow us to grasp the profound meaning of artistic choice and freedom.
With the commitment to our Expowall activity we will try to give particular relevance to this aspect: the novelty of the urban landscape, firstly of Milan, we do not want to live as the triumph of buildings – of course this matters – but as a new area of creative freedom.
Expo offers a further reflection, for a uniqueness which is its own: most of the buildings of Expo 2015 will be no more, and in any case will not be there where we have seen them. What will remain is points of view and perspectives, chosen by photographers.
Expo 2015 allows us thus to give a new meaning to the famous phrase of Adorno, that we adapt to the recent past, and adopt, in light of the creative work of photographers: “This is not about preserving the past, but about keeping promises.”
Freedom, precisely.

Questa mostra di fotografia sul paesaggio urbano e il bellissimo lavoro The Stately Side of Expo di Cirenei e Menghi che ne rappresenta il cuore, inaugura l’attività della Galleria Expowall.
Questo tema verrà declinato anche con altre iniziative fotografiche nel corso del 2016 e rappresenta la volontà di contribuire attraverso lo sguardo soggettivo e libero dell’artista fotografo alla riflessione sullo sviluppo delle città e delle comunità che viviamo, e che con i nostri comportamenti definiamo.
Da questo punto di vista EXPO 2015 è stato uno straordinario catalizzatore di sguardi e di pensieri, e infatti da qui abbiamo cominciato.
Tra i tanti significati attribuiti a Expo 2015 uno forse è stato trascurato, schiacciato dalla forza dei numeri: ma l’esposizione universale ha costituito fondamentalmente un eccezionale momento di esaltazione della soggettività e anche dell’eterodossia.
La definizione del decumano, del cardo, della tensostruttura e della posizione dei cluster ha costituito la semplice ed efficiente ossatura, lasciando ai Paesi la libertà e la soggettività di progettare e costruire. È stato un episodio complessivo di libertà creative.
Il fotografo raccoglie questa libertà creativa, e vi applica la sua. Al riguardo è emblematico l’ottimo lavoro di Cirenei e Menghi: diverse visioni applicate in fondo allo stesso universo che ci permettono di cogliere il significato profondo di scelta artistica e di libertà.
Con l’impegno che metteremo nella nostra attività di Expowall cercheremo di sottolineare soprattutto questo aspetto: la novità del paesaggio urbano, in primis di Milano, la vogliamo vivere non come il trionfo delle costruzioni – anche questo conta, certo- ma come nuovo ambito di libertà creative.
Expo offre una riflessione in più, per una unicità tutta sua: la gran parte delle costruzioni di Expo 2015 non ci saranno più, e comunque non saranno lì dove le abbiamo viste. Resteranno i punti di vista e le prospettive, le scelte del fotografi.
Expo 2015 ci permette quindi di dare un nuovo significato alla famosa frase di Adorno, che noi adattiamo al passato prossimo, e adottiamo, alla luce del lavoro creativo dei fotografi: “Non si tratta di conservare il passato, ma di mantenerne le promesse”.
La libertà, appunto.
