In Milan between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on July 25, a cloudburst hit with wind gusts of over 100 km/h.
Numerous trees were blown down by the fury of the wind, the streets are overrun with huge tree trunks that crushed cars, the city’s parks are a tangle of trunks, fronds and roots that are now seeing the light along with the large portions of land they were clinging to until now.
The power lines of the circular trolley bus lines have also been heavily damaged, with trees that have collapsed in their midst sweeping away power cables. Firefighters are working tirelessly to cut the trees into small portions and haul away the wood to clear cars, roads and bike paths.
Milan’s major parks will remain closed until the end of August to avert further dangers from any unsafe branches, and in any case from the presence of all these woody protuberances that could pose a danger.

I took a quick walk around the city to capture some symbolic images of this disaster, due to climate change that is now before the eyes of everyone with a modicum of common sense.

With my project “At the Edge of the Emptiness” I am among the winners of the second edition of the New-Post Photography 2021 Award!

MIA FAIR is pleased to announce the winners of the New-Post Photography 2021 Award, dedicated to new trends in contemporary photography.

Alessandra Baldoni, Nicola Bertasi, Alberto Ceresa, Matteo Cirenei, Tina Cosmai, Leonardo Magrelli, Luca Marianaccio, Amaranta Medri, Francesco Merlini, Novella Oliana, Camila Orozco, Michele Palazzi, Stefano Parrini, Edoardo Romagnoli, Gian Marco Sanna, Kai Uwe Schulte-Bunert, Marco Tagliafico, Stefano Tubaro, Silvio Wolf.

Tuesday, June 4, 2019 opens at 6.00 pm at the Anna Maria Consadori Gallery, the exhibition “Milan – Public Art” included in the third edition of Milan Photo Week, the festival entirely dedicated to photography that will involve the whole city.

Consistently with the artistic address of the gallery, which promotes twentieth-century art and design, the exhibition presents the work of Matteo Cirenei, photographer of architecture and urban landscape, who in the last four years focused to a project that investigates the constitution of the cultural imaginary as to what is “public space”, and what is “public art”.

The area in which the works are located is part of the city, for this reason the project aims to highlight the dialogue with the surrounding environment: artworks add visual quality to a built environment, and a careful urban design strategy promotes a higher level of integration between art, architecture and landscape. In recent years, Milan has greatly redeveloped its urban landscape, greatly improving public spaces by promoting alternative mobility and consequently enhancing the green and pedestrian areas.

Sapienza University of Rome receives grant from the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles to create a conservation plan for the Flaminio Stadium in Rome.

Matteo Cirenei and Marco Menghi were called to document the conservation status of the architectural artifact.

The Getty Foundation in Los Angeles has awarded a grant of $180,000 to Sapienza University in Rome for the development of a Conservation Plan for the Flaminio Stadium in Rome by Pier Luigi and Antonio Nervi. The Getty Foundation has given this award through its Keeping it Modern initiative, following the application presented in March 2017 by the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering of the Sapienza University of Rome, the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Association (PLN Project) and DO.CO.MO.MO Italy, in agreement with the City of Rome.

Designed between 1957 and 1958 by the noted Italian engineer Nervi–a pioneer of the use of reinforced concrete- with his son, the architect Antonio Nervi, the Flaminio Stadium was built for the XVII Olympic Games in Rome (1960) and inaugurated in 1959. It is a unique work that offers a highly original integration of form and structure as well as between architecture and engineering. It testifies to a special and internationally recognized period for Italian architectural culture. Abandoned for years, the Flaminio stadium is now in an advanced state of decay. Despite having been declared in 2005 a “work of excellence” by the General Directorate for Architecture and Contemporary Art (DARC), Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, the stadium, owned by the City of Rome, is currently lacking any form of official protection as a result of Italian Law n. 106/2011 that changed the limit for protection of a building from 50 years to 70 years from its construction.

PG 283852/2016.

The Bel Vedere Gallery, in collaboration with the G.R.I.N. (Iconographic National Editors Group), presents a collection of images taken in 2016 by forty two photographers and dedicated to Milan, the city chosen as the ground for reflection and discovery.

New appointment with “Prima Visione”, the exhibition dedicated to Milan and held at the Bel Vedere gallery. The exhibition, now in its twelfth edition, shows, once again, the great partnership between the Gallery, the association of photo-editors G.R.I.N. and photographers: Forty two selected authors, almost all young people, who in 2016 have made at least one image of the city, of which more than a dozen in black and white. In addition to the many historical monuments in all their beauty and the inevitable suburbs, even some vision of a Milan almost unprecedented, in the interior, in the fog, night and romantic. Then there are the people, photographed in solitary, or during festivals and events, such as Chinese New Year, the vintage car races, to the museum, or listed in curious poses and even a bit ‘surreal.

During the exhibition will be on display 8 vintage black and white photographs of Milan in the 60s, made by Carla Cerati.
